Stephen Parker Appointed CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security Amid Strategic Overhaul

Boeing has officially named Stephen (Steve) Parker as the president and chief executive officer of its Defense, Space & Security (BDS) division, effective immediately. This appointment solidifies Parker’s leadership after serving in an interim capacity since September 2024, following the departure of former CEO Ted Colbert. The decision is part of a broader strategic initiative under Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, aimed at stabilizing operations and steering the company through ongoing challenges in its defense and space sectors.

Parker, a Boeing veteran with a tenure spanning over 37 years, brings extensive experience to his new role. His previous positions include chief operating officer of BDS and leadership roles in the Bombers & Fighters and Vertical Lift divisions. Notably, he managed programs such as the F/A-18, F-15, T-7A, and the AH-64 Apache, and oversaw Boeing Defence Australia, the company’s largest subsidiary outside the United States. His deep expertise in manufacturing, program management, and technical leadership is expected to be instrumental in addressing the division’s current challenges.

Under Parker’s interim leadership, BDS has made strides in stabilizing its operations, improving program execution, and strengthening customer relationships. CEO Kelly Ortberg praised Parker’s contributions, stating, “Under Steve’s leadership, our defense business has stabilized its operations, improved program execution, and strengthened relationships with our customers.”

The BDS division has faced significant hurdles in recent years, including financial losses due to cost overruns on fixed-price contracts and technical setbacks in its space programs. One notable issue was the Starliner spacecraft program, which experienced prolonged delays and technical problems, leading NASA to return the capsule without astronauts. These challenges have underscored the need for experienced leadership to navigate the complex defense and aerospace landscape.

Parker’s appointment comes at a critical juncture as Boeing seeks to rebuild its reputation and financial stability. The company has also announced other leadership changes, including the appointment of Jesus ‘Jay’ Malave, formerly of Lockheed Martin, as its new Chief Financial Officer, effective August 15.

As CEO of BDS, Parker will oversee all aspects of the division, which provides technology, products, and solutions for defense, government, space, and intelligence customers worldwide. His responsibilities will include addressing ongoing challenges, such as the execution of key defense programs and the management of complex aerospace projects.

Parker’s extensive background and proven leadership within Boeing position him to effectively guide the BDS division through its current challenges and towards a more stable and successful future.
