UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
Thompson, 50, arrived at the Hilton Hotel around 6:46 a.m. to attend UnitedHealth Group’s Investor Day, which was being held in a ballroom where he was masked. A man was waiting for him. According to the New York Times, authorities say it appears to be a targeted attack.
Officials said Thompson was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
UnitedHealth Group has canceled its Investor Day event.
“Unfortunately, as some of you may know, one of our team members is facing a very serious medical situation,” a UnitedHealth Group staff member said on an investor day, according to CNBC. “I’m working on it,” he said. “As a result, we regret to inform you that we have decided to end today’s event. We hope you understand.”
Mr. Thompson was appointed CEO in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, is No. 5 on the Fortune 500.
The investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made, the NYPD said.
