What is Sora?
Sora is a powerful AI video generation model that lets you create videos from text prompts, animate images, and remix videos with new styles. OpenAI first previewed this model in February, but today is the first time the company is releasing it for broader use.
What’s new in this release?
Sora’s core functionality, creating impressive videos with simple prompts, is similar to what was previewed in February, but OpenAI is making the model faster and cheaper ahead of this broader release. I tried to do so. There are several new features, two of which stand out.
One is called a storyboard. It allows you to create multiple AI-generated videos and assemble them on a timeline, just like using a traditional video editor like Adobe Premiere Pro.
The second is a feed that acts as a kind of creative gallery. OpenAI says users can post Sora-generated videos to their feed, see and tweak prompts behind specific videos, and generally find inspiration.
How far can you go with it?
You can generate videos from text prompts, change the style and elements of your video using a tool called Remix, and assemble multiple clips using Storyboard. Sora also includes preset styles that you can apply to your videos, such as moody film noir or cardboard and paper craft for a stop-motion feel. You can also trim and loop the videos you create.
Who can use it?
To generate videos with Sora, you need to subscribe to one of OpenAI’s premium plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) or ChatGPT Pro ($200/month). Both subscriptions include access to other OpenAI products. Users using ChatGPT Plus can generate videos up to 5 seconds in resolution up to 720p. This plan allows you to create 50 videos per month.
Users with a ChatGPT Pro subscription can generate longer high-definition videos, limited to 1080p resolution and 20 seconds duration. You can also have Sora generate up to five video variations at once from a single prompt, allowing you to explore your options more quickly. Pro users are limited to 500 videos per month, but can also create unlimited “relaxing” videos. This video is not generated on the fly, but is queued when the site has low traffic.
With either subscription level, you can create videos in three aspect ratios: portrait, landscape, and square.
