Empowering Job Seekers: The Role of Goodwill Industries in Workforce Development
Understanding the Opportunity
The landscape of the U.S. labor market is undergoing significant transformation. Factors such as advancing automation, shifts in federal spending, and a growing aging population are contributing to this evolution.
As a consequence, there is a notable change in workforce demands, where an increase in higher-paying jobs is anticipated. Research indicates that approximately 12 million workers may need to transition to new roles by 2030 to adapt to these changes, highlighting the necessity for upskilling among lower-wage employees.
Goodwill Industries International, supported by a network of over 15,000 workforce development professionals, assists approximately 1.7 million individuals annually in the U.S. and Canada in navigating these workforce transitions. The organization recognizes its unique position to empower people from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they have the skills to thrive in a changing economy.
“While everyone knows our stores, we do so much more,” states Steve Preston, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Our mission is to put people to work, and we believe everyone needs the opportunity to find purposeful employment. As our world changes, we want to help individuals gain the skills to not only adapt but truly thrive.”
The Solution: The Opportunity Accelerator®
To address these evolving challenges, Goodwill Industries International, in collaboration with local Goodwill organizations and McKinsey, has developed the Opportunity Accelerator®, a framework designed to assist job seekers in navigating their career paths.
This structured approach begins with assessing individual career and financial goals, followed by providing occupational and digital skills training, and concluding with job placement assistance. Additional wraparound services support participants and their families to ensure their success in new roles.
To effectively implement this framework, enhancements were made to standardize its offerings across Goodwill’s extensive network of workforce development centers. These centers provide essential services including:
- Career navigation
- Resume support
- On-the-job training
- Job placement services
- Supplementary support services
The collaboration focused on three primary goals:
- Standardizing framework and services to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Improving operational support for local Goodwill teams.
- Expanding reach and supporting adoption across the Goodwill network.
“What makes these offerings unique and impactful is their comprehensive approach,” notes Nora Gardner, a senior partner at McKinsey. “By starting with a deep understanding of each individual’s goals, and then providing tailored training, local Goodwill organizations not only help people find jobs but also ensure they achieve meaningful, long-term success in their careers.”
Measuring Impact and Growth
The initiative has set the stage for the Opportunity Accelerator to reach millions of job seekers across North America through the Goodwill network while reinforcing the importance of technology and data in program effectiveness.
“Data and technology are key to empowering this effort,” emphasizes Bryan Hancock, a McKinsey partner. “By leveraging standardized tools and automated data collection, the Goodwill network can ensure that every job seeker receives the same high-quality support, no matter where they are in North America.”
This focus on analytical frameworks has allowed Goodwill to identify crucial elements within the Opportunity Accelerator journey, streamlining from over 35 optional services to a refined selection of best practices. Key highlights include:
- Simplified intake and assessment processes
- Mentorship-driven career coaching
- Engagement with program alumni
With a strategy in place for future expansion, Goodwill Industries International and its local leaders are poised to significantly increase their outreach, with goals of strengthening career prospects for millions, particularly among early-career job seekers.
“By scaling the Opportunity Accelerator, we are not just connecting people with jobs; we are fostering growth and economic empowerment for individuals, families, and communities,” asserts Steve Preston. “This initiative is about giving everyone, regardless of their background, the chance to succeed and thrive in the modern economy.”
