Banking and Shipping Services to Pause on Memorial Day 2025

by The Leader Report

Millions of Americans will encounter service pauses on Monday, May 26, 2025, as banks and major shipping providers temporarily close in honor of Memorial Day.

Bank of America, Citibank, and several other major financial institutions have confirmed the suspension of in-person services, while delivery giants like FedEx and UPS will significantly scale back operations. The nationwide observance will affect consumers, small businesses, and logistical schedules across the country.

Banks to Shut Doors Nationwide

Bank of America will shutter all 3,800 branches across the United States for the federal holiday. Citibank has announced a similar closure, and other major institutions such as Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, PNC Bank, and Truist are expected to do the same, although specific announcements may vary by region.

“Our branches will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, but customers can still access digital banking services online and via mobile apps,” a Bank of America spokesperson said.

While ATMs and online banking platforms will remain operational, customers planning transactions that require in-branch assistance are urged to complete their banking needs before the holiday weekend begins.

This closure is consistent with past Memorial Day observances, during which most banks observe the federal holiday by closing their physical locations to honor the memory of fallen service members.

Shipping Services Significantly Reduced

FedEx and UPS will limit their operations on Memorial Day. FedEx will suspend nearly all pick-up and delivery services, maintaining only its Custom Critical service for urgent shipments.

UPS will follow suit, halting its regular delivery and pick-up services for the day, with only its Express Critical service available to handle time-sensitive shipments.

“Memorial Day is a time to honor our nation’s heroes. Our shipping operations will resume normal service on Tuesday, May 27,” a UPS representative shared.

Customers relying on delivery services for business or personal reasons are advised to plan around the closures to avoid delays. This could impact everything from e-commerce order fulfillment to time-sensitive legal and medical document delivery.

Small businesses that depend heavily on shipping services should alert customers in advance about potential delays and consider alternative delivery timelines or expedited services earlier in the week.

Digital Alternatives and Precautionary Tips

Though physical banking locations will be closed, most banks will continue offering 24/7 access through mobile apps and websites. Customers can check balances, transfer funds, and pay bills using these platforms.

However, experts warn of increased fraud attempts during holiday shutdowns. Scammers may take advantage of the closures to impersonate bank officials and solicit sensitive information.

“Be especially cautious of unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from your bank. Always verify through official contact methods,” advised cybersecurity expert Linda Reynolds.

To help prevent becoming a victim of fraud, consumers should avoid clicking on suspicious links, never share account details over the phone or email, and use multi-factor authentication wherever possible.

Background on Memorial Day Observance

Memorial Day, a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates military personnel who died in service to the United States. It is traditionally marked by parades, remembrance ceremonies, and visits to cemeteries and memorials.

Federal institutions, including post offices, schools, and courts, will also be closed. Most state and local government offices will not operate, and public transportation systems may run on reduced schedules.

Many Americans also take the opportunity to travel or host gatherings, making the holiday weekend one of the busiest travel periods of the year. AAA projects millions will take to the roads and skies, with increased congestion anticipated from Friday through Monday.

Planning Ahead

To avoid disruptions:

  • Complete bank transactions by Friday, May 23
  • Schedule or adjust shipping deadlines for non-essential items
  • Use online banking tools for urgent financial needs
  • Watch for suspicious emails, calls, or texts related to bank accounts
  • Inform customers and clients early about possible service delays

With proactive planning, consumers and businesses can navigate Memorial Day with minimal inconvenience. Keeping these considerations in mind ensures a respectful and smooth observance of this important national holiday.
