Conducted among over 8,000 participants from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the findings reveal surprising insights into consumer awareness and emotional connections to small enterprises.

The Scale of Small Businesses

In the United States alone, there are approximately 33 million small businesses. However, only 19% of surveyed Americans accurately recognized this figure, with many underestimating the true number by considerable margins. This awareness gap suggests a broader trend in how communities perceive the role and impact of small businesses.

The Emotional Connection

The report indicates that small businesses foster substantial emotional connections with their customers. Frank Vella, CEO of Constant Contact, emphasized that consumers tend to view their favorite local establishments not just as places to make purchases, but as integral parts of their community fabric. “Many of us feel a personal connection to our favorite local businesses, but our research shows a significant awareness gap regarding the prevalence of these businesses,” Vella noted.

On a global scale, 40% of consumers report visiting small businesses at least once a week. Furthermore, over 80% agree that these businesses have a positive impact on their lives. Key reasons for supporting small businesses include:

Outlook for Small Businesses

Another survey conducted by Goldman Sachs reveals a favorable outlook among small business owners in the U.S. A notable 69% express optimism regarding their financial health, and 78% plan to expand their operations this year. Additionally, nearly half of the surveyed business owners indicate intentions to create new jobs in the near future.
