Jamie Council: Redefining The Game In Sports Broadcasting

by The Leader Report Team

Jamie Council is reshaping the world of sports journalism through authenticity, adaptability, and an unwavering dedication to telling the stories that often go unheard. With a foundation built on personal grit and professional versatility, Council has cultivated a multi-dimensional media career that challenges traditional broadcasting norms and uplifts underrepresented voices. Her story represents not only the evolution of a broadcaster but also a larger shift in how media, especially sports media, embraces change, independence, and inclusion.

Throughout her decade-long media career, Council has held positions across North Dakota and Washington State, covering everything from high school rivalries to NFL training camps. She has captured moments from dirt tracks to boat races and chronicled the draft of quarterback Carson Wentz from his hometown of Bismarck. Her ability to pivot across sports and formats speaks not only to her deep knowledge of athletics but also to her versatile skill set as a broadcaster, producer, and storyteller.

After a successful tenure as Sports Director for NBC affiliate stations KNDU, KNDO, and SWX, Council made an unconventional yet purposeful career decision: she left mainstream media and took a leap into independent sports coverage. It was a choice born not of defeat, but of determination. “I just want the same opportunity to lose,” she says, referencing the uneven playing field many women still face. Her transition into independent work was not just a career move—it was a declaration of agency and authenticity.

Council’s freelance business, Intangible Media, became an outlet for the type of work she had always wanted to create—content rooted in community, purpose, and raw storytelling. “This business is my final push to use my talents in the way they were meant to be used,” she explains. Through this venture, she has expanded her reach while maintaining her focus on local impact. She currently hosts The Sports Council on 1340 ESPN, covers sports ranging from high school athletics on NFHS to NCAA Division I events on ESPN+, and works on various production projects. Her content is often deeply tied to local communities, emphasizing her belief that in a global world, local stories still matter.

Her freelance journey has been met with critical and professional success. Council was awarded Tri-Cities Best in both 2021 and 2023 and was named to the 2nd Team All-AWFC in 2022 as a professional indoor football player. Yes, while growing her media business, Council took time to play for the Tri-City Rush, where she led the league’s kickers in points and accuracy during their undefeated championship season. Her presence on the field wasn’t just symbolic—it was dominant. It was also another example of how she doesn’t shy away from breaking norms.

Her work has drawn attention beyond regional coverage. A feature by Minot State University highlighted her transition into independent media and celebrated the platform she created for herself. The Women’s Sports Collection also recognized her voice and impact within the broader narrative of women in sports. These recognitions, while important, are just one part of a larger story—one she is still writing.

Council does not seek validation through accolades but rather through impact. “The hardest part has been the constant change that comes with the territory,” she reflects. “Taking nothing personally, learning and growing from every experience.” She acknowledges the emotional weight of independence, sharing that the path is filled with moments of doubt and reinvention. “Being both driven and compassionate with yourself is just part of the challenge and reward of growth.”

Her narrative sits at the crossroads of journalism, entrepreneurship, and advocacy—not through overt gestures but by existing authentically in spaces that have historically excluded people like her. She doesn’t frame herself as a trailblazer, though many would argue that she is. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. “It’s not about what I’m doing but how I feel about what I’m doing,” she says. “I want to make a difference and serve people whether I’m thriving or just pushing through.”

With nearly three years under her belt as an independent business owner, Council is emblematic of a broader shift in media: one that values adaptability, voice, and integrity over traditional hierarchies and outdated gatekeeping. She is part of a generation of media professionals who are choosing creative control, community engagement, and entrepreneurial spirit over corporate alignment.

Her message to aspiring broadcasters, especially women, is rooted in authenticity and courage. “In this world, we are constantly told we aren’t enough and feel like we have to sacrifice ourselves or our ideals to survive. This journey has been a challenge in living out those ideals.” She has built something that didn’t exist before—a business that reflects her values and a brand that prioritizes connection over recognition.

Jamie Council’s story is not one of overnight success or viral stardom. It is a story of perseverance, strategic pivots, and unwavering belief in the power of local sports and personal storytelling. Through her voice, audiences get more than just scores and highlights—they get context, passion, and a lens that sees the game for more than what happens between the lines.

As media continues to evolve, so too does the path for those who shape it. Jamie Council stands not at the sidelines, but firmly in the game—calling it, producing it, and changing it, one story at a time.
